Dispatches from the Digital Revolution

What’s in your inbox?: Staying informed about publishing

While we would love to be able to say that this blog can bring you all the information you could possibly need to know about publishing, that wouldn’t be true. Obviously we choose articles that speak to us, that invite further discussion, or that speak to what’s going on today. There’s a lot more news out there than we can cover in one blog post per day. So, for all you new publishing folk out there (or writers, or readers, or anyone who wants to be more “plugged in” to the publishing world), here’s a quick guide to some of the top industry newsletters, which will deliver the world of publishing right to your inbox.

PW Daily

Publishers Weekly offers several different newsletters that run on different schedules, including newsletters that cover cookbooks, children’s literature, religious publishing, comic books, and more. The one that you should definitely be subscribing to is PW Daily, which brings publishing news to your inbox every day. All of PW’s e-newsletters are free.

Publishers Lunch

This  free daily newsletter is offered by Publishers Marketplace. Publishers Marketplace also offers a variety of paid services (including a “deluxe” daily newsletter). Note that it takes about three weeks to process a subscription to this newsletter.

Shelf Awareness

A free newsletter for book people. Shelf Awareness offers two newsletters for two demographics: one is a newsletter that’s just for folks who love to read, bringing you recommendations of the top books being published each week. The other is a trade newsletter for industry professionals.

Digital Book World

This newsletter brings you digital publishing-specific news on a daily basis. It provides deeper information on digital publishing than PW or Publishers Lunch, and focuses on a slightly different segment of the industry.

O’Reilly Tools of Change for Publishing

The O’Reilly Tools of Change is a weekly newsletter that also looks at the digital end of publishing. Newsletters offer an overview of recent news in publishing as well as links to resources like podcasts and other media.

Do you subscribe to valuable newsletters beyond these? Feel free to post them below and continue the conversation!
