DoJ settlement to start Spring 2013? According to Publishers Weekly, “Motions made late last week pertaining to lawsuits filed against Apple and five publishers over e-book price fixing charges give an idea on when a trial in the Department of Justice case against Apple and Macmillan and Penguin may go to court.” The settlement may start next March.

Amazon’s new venture. An article in Forbes, reports on rumors that the online retail behemoth will be opening a “boutique bookstore” in Seattle, and that it has the potential to be huge. 

Microsoft launches Surface Tablet and  Windows Phone 8. Could these be the next devices to read on? Direction competition to the iPad? For more on the announcement, check out USA Today and Reuters’ reports.

Nook sales rise. Publishers Weekly took a look at B&N’s financials, stating, “The company reported that sales in the newly broken-out Nook business unit rose 34.3% in the year, to $933 million, while the division posted an EBITDA loss of $266 million compared to $209 million in fiscal 2011.”

According to Shelf Awareness, “Barnes & Noble plans to open five new bookstores with a “new merchandise format” this year and close 15 established stores.”
